    I would like to know your opinion and thoughts on Ubuntu Pro?

    • @NerdOnTheStreet
      @NerdOnTheStreet 16 годин тому

      I haven't personally used it. I think it's a semi-reasonable business model that's similar to how Red Hat operates RHEL in some ways. On the other hand, I think e.g. kernel live patching is something that's mostly useful for servers and not entirely relevant for desktop/laptop usage, and I think the fact that they withhold _security_ updates from non-subscribers (after doing the work of preparing the updates) is bad optics for Canonical. As a maintainer of Pop!_OS (at my day job, which is not affiliated with this channel), I will say the level to which Canonical tied Ubuntu Pro services and advertising into the Ubuntu metapackages and basic packages such as apt has been extremely annoying at times. Pop!_OS has ended up having to do a lot of whack-a-mole work trying to suppress advertisements for services that don't work on Pop!_OS anyway. However, the implementation makes sense from their perspective, and dealing with that sort of thing comes with the territory of being a derivative distribution. Reading the current terms of service for the personal (free for 5 machines) Ubuntu Pro subscription, I don't see anything that suggests it's not allowed to be used for commercial usage-- only that it's limited to 5 machines (per legal entity) and that it's provided as-is/with no warranty. So if you're actually daily driving Ubuntu, I'd see no reason not to sign up for the personal account and see if you notice any of the features. (I remember having an Ubuntu One account that I signed into on my Ubuntu installs back when that was an actual service; it was obviously a different type of service, but I had no problem creating an account with Canonical.)

    • @NerdOnTheStreet
      @NerdOnTheStreet День тому

      For an issue like that, you're definitely going to want to include what specific model of laptop you have when you ask questions about it. The first troubleshooting step I'd take is to boot the system, run "sudo journalctl -f" in a terminal, then see if relevant-looking output shows up at the moment when the touchpad stops working.

    I use Ventoy ISO boot loader. I didn’t like it. I went back to 2204 because there was no option for Python3 3.10.

    • @NerdOnTheStreet
      @NerdOnTheStreet День тому

      Yeah, Ubuntu 24.04 ships Python 3.12.3 (while 22.04 ships Python 3.10.6, as you said). A minor version bump like that doesn't seem like it should be a huge deal, but then again, I'm not primarily a Python developer. I will say that staying on an older OS version just for the Python version it ships seems a little overkill and certainly unsustainable over the long term. If you really need to stick with one specific version of Python, you might eventually want to look into solutions like Docker/Podman containers or at least Distrobox to let you run Python 3.10 in an Ubuntu 22.04 environment from a newer OS version (or any other OS entirely).

      The Composr community (including the devs) are really nice & helpful, so definitely post on their forums if you try it out and need help figuring anything out! Also, my usage of Composr is semi-advanced. You can basically just start with the WYSIWYG capabilities. If you do that, then being able to drop down to templating to tweak things is just a huge bonus.

    Didn't you say you went to school to learn to manage these things? Yet, you're google'ing how to access a serial console ("minicom", procomm or hyperterm for windows people), and struggling to understand how simple ROMMON is, or that these simple, tiny boxes do not have "bootflash". I want to reach through the screen (back through time) and strangle you! Take some time off camera to familiarize yourself with the toys you want to show off, without wasting 1.5hrs immortalizing bad a "nerd" you can be. Don't know how to access a serial device. Don't know how to use screen. Pathologically unable to understand screen run as root ("sudo") is not the same as screen run as _any other user!_ (the problem is not linux, it's _you_ attaching multiple processes to the serial port, because screen is not a terminal program and does not lock the port for exclusive access)

    Thanks for this super helpful video. I just purchased these speakers and at first it seemed like your video might be for techies but you pack in a lot of good information. Even though I don't know the science behind this technology I was able to follow most of it. At first I just wanted to know how to connect them as nobody else was showing that very clearly. But I got so much more out of this. Your tips about the speaker wires are great. No other video mentioned the holes in the connectors that the wires need to be threaded through to secure them -- really important. And appreciated your concluding followup remarks after testing them for a couple weeks. Yours is the most comprehensive review of all that's out there. Really valuable for anyone considering buying these speakers. I'm seeing that just last month, Audioengine finally posted a video showing how to set them up. It's only a couple minutes long so doesn't provide the detail and tips you do. I recommend watching both but for anyone wanting a good understanding of these speakers, this video is great.

      Not sure which version you're referring to. Referencing the version history on Wikipedia, Version 9 was the first browser on Windows, Linux, and BSD to pass the Acid2 standards test. Speed Dial was introduced in 9.2, and I recall that being an iconic Opera feature for a while. Version 11 introduced extension support, tab stacking, and mouse gestures (and support to pass the Acid3 standards test). Version 12 was the last one to use Presto instead of Blink (and you might consider it the last one that was "real Opera," considering both the engine change and the many features dropped by the Blink version).

      I looked into this a little-- based on what I see on the Owncast GitHub page, it requires an RTMP input, not RTSP. There are other options for converting RTSP to RTMP (one's called MediaMTX) that may be simpler to run long-term than OBS.
